Regardless of whether Jaguar is for sale, the British automaker is widely known to be at work on a replacement to its aging S-Type luxury sedan. During the launch of the 2007 XKR, Jaguar reportedly previewed the 2008 S-Type to dealers. The U.K.’s AutoExpress claims to have talked to individuals who saw the preview, and has put together an artist’s illustration of how the car looks. The image appears on the cover of the latest issue of the magazine, which is in stores and available for order now (subscribe). See the cover image after the jump…

It’s what happens when you cross the front of a Camry with the back of a Grand Prix, then add a grill from a weber BBQ. If you can get past all of that, then it’s only merely ugly.
I wouldn’t want one, but maybe somebody else might…

Uh, not in a million years would JAG sell such a unclassy, unsofisticated, and just plain ugly car. That Asian-American design in the picture would cause even Hyundai and Ford to hurl. If JAG wants to survive, that car can only be a 15-year-olds imagination and nothing more.

This isn’t real, folks – it’s a poor quality computer rendering, using the rear of the new XK and some made-up front end. This has come out of the mind of a graphic designer, not a car designer. The new S-type will not look like this. In fact, no-one but some Jaguar employees konw what it will look like.

Hyundai? Kia? Taurus? You Americans are on tons of cheap crack, pull your fingers out of your cousins’ asses and actually LOOK at the thing, don’t merely glance – it’s a 100% pure Jaguar.
Good God people – a Buick? Cut that **** out. I might be inclined to agree that perhaps a FLUSH side profile yeilds a hint at Pontiac, the Grand Prix particularly, but a Buick? Bull****…
Quattroporte? Well certainly aimed at a similar demographic, Maser is bigger but temperamental…
The nose-to-flank treatment is a little Lexus GS while the rest is pure Jaguar XK – The grille itself isn’t exactly hot, but Callum will sort something out, trust me…
Oh, and by the way Cole, you tit – it’s ‘Lucerne’
One last thing – all you wankers who put Jaguar down? That’s why they’re dying – they make some of the BEST rides on Earth and you tossers still buy Benz/BMW craporama, you can be ashamed of yourselves – I WOULD LOVE TO SEE GENERALLY MOTORS BUILD ANYTHING THIS COOL, but you know what, they can’t – they just don’t have the skill.
The XKR is the best vehicle in the world. I beg you to argue that with any amount of resolve.
So there.

If this is the real thing, I think it’s gonna be a minor hit, but definitely not going to save the company. Keep in mind that the new MB E-class is coming out at about the same time…

The Jaguar badge and chrome line inside the grille looks out of place better remove it altogether. The grille should look like the RD6 concept car. As for the rest of the car, it looks like the Buick LaCrosse. Why can’t Jaguar take a look at Pininfarina’s Maserati Quattroporte sedan for inspiration in which the designers at Pininfarina managed to make the car look sexy with curve and not look too much a 90’s car.

This image is obviously very crudely done but it claims to be based on descriptions made by those who have actually seen the official work, so I am still worried. The radiator grille came as no surprise, can’t have an S-TYPE without it, what’s truly disturbing is the headlamps. It looks rather asian, and I think the only thing worse than being compared to a Buick would be being compared to a Hyundai. I can’t see how anyone would get the idea that the new XK is a “homage” to the late Ford Taurus based on the shape of the grille. The oval is a modern (meaning less elegant) variation on the E-type grille, just like the taillights. Oh, and there is no resemblence whatsoever to the Maserati Quattroporte, except that they both have four wheels.
I sincerely hope that Jaguar does not screw it up, I would not want my favorite marque to end up in the hands of Renault. I have faith in Ian Callum (well, I lost some of it when I saw the new XKR, subtle modifications my ass), but this image still makes me worried.

I believe the real thing will still surprise us—like Morningstar, I have faith in Ian Callum. The proportions are probably wrong, the detailing right, when you think about how best one can describe a car. The dealers who have seen the S are impressed, so we can safely assume it will look better.
Remember that the Jaguar needs to be forward-looking, so if it shocks us, then I believe that is a good thing—no more retromobiles, I say.
