The last few years have given modern credibility to the phrase “no replacement for displacement.” Indeed, automakers have put a huge emphasis on high-displacement engines. Take the upcoming E90 BMW M3 , for example. The Bavarian automaker is putting a 4.4 liter V8 engine in a car that was previously defined by lean inline-4 and -6 engines. But like many new SUVs, high-displacement sports cars may be arriving at the wrong time. And while BMW is putting a big block in the M3, the company is rumored to be doing something even more contradictory to its roots. A number of reports indicate BMW plans to release a 300-340 horsepower twin-turbo 3-series called the 335i. AutoWeek looks at just this issue in a recent article, stating: “European carmakers and suppliers see gasoline turbochargers as another weapon in the battle to reduce emissions.”
