Japanese cars don’t have failing safety equipment? Really? What about the recall on numerous Nissan’s for an airbag fix, maybe two weeks ago, where if the battery gets run down the passenger airbags could fail to deploy altogether. Days before Ford had a similar recall, but their airbags were going off too forcefully. What would you rather? One that’s more powerful than it was intended or one that doesn’t work at all? Or Honda recalling all of their new Civics for ‘Wheel Bearing Failure’. Or last week, when Toyota had to recall every Corolla, Matrix, and Vibe (don’t even pretend that there are Pontiac parts on that car) made since 2003 due to bolt failure holding the front door glass in. Toyota loosing a class action suit over selling one of the poorest designed V6′s we’ve seen in decades (Camry), not to mention their V8 Tundra’s being recalled for possible ‘Engine Replacement’.

1115 – Unless you are completely ignorant, you have to admit that GM is improving its line-up. They produced crap for a long time, but at least GM is starting to look past quarter profits and realizing that unless it starts making some higher quality cars, they’re done for. Also, Toyota itself has admited that its been having some engineering problems lately due to its goal of beating out GM as the largest car producer.

Everyone else – Unless you are completely ignorant, you have to admit that a lot of those Japanese cars have been very reliable, and even fun in some cases (Prelude, Supra, 350z/g35 coupe etc). You will also have to admit that GM/ford does have a somewhat deserved reputation of building crap based on decades of producing…crap. I am well aware that at least GM is starting to turn itself around, but public sentiment can be rather unforgiving.

GM has certainly built some extremely reliable cars. I could mention that GM’s trucks routinely outlast Toyota’s trucks and cars, but a truck-to-car comparison isn’t fair. Plus its also not fair that Toyota gives us the POS Tacoma and Tundra but gives the rest of the world the stellar Hilux. There are still LT1 powered Caprices in service with well over 300,000 miles on them and those cars are 12-14 years old.

You mean Japanese Sports Car. The 2JZ-GTE Supra is the only one worth talking about.

1115 you admit that you don’t work on your own cars and there you aren’t experiencing one of the most glaring shortcomings of Japanese cars (and Fords), they’re absurdly messy and cluttered under the hood and needlessly difficult to work on. There’s no room to work and its not laid out very well. I had to pull so much crap off my friend’s Camry to change a water pump for him, including the timing chain. It was a 5-6 hour job. That same job would take me 20 minutes tops on a GM pickup truck and I wouldn’t have to mess with anything other than the fan to do it.

As far as reliability I have a 91 Caprice that I still drive with 165,000 on it. Its been extremely reliable. There are far more American cars from the 80s still alive than Japanese cars, which have all disintegrated. The most common car I see from the early 90s still running on the highways is a Buick LeSabre.

As far as safety goes I’ll put my Suburban up against anything. It’s 6000lbs and I”m surrounded by crush zones and surrounded by airbags. Its the pinnacle of collision safety.

To everybody else:
2 MPG is a world of difference. My Suburban gets 2mpg better on the highway than my old Silvy did. It saves me about $20 a month in fuel costs. That’s a difference. Each MPG counts when the numbers are so low. Yes I can afford the gas, but I’d prefer not to spend it if I can get a more efficient V8.
