A woman has been jailed after a Washington State highway trooper pulled her over for speeding and discovered her three children and the family dog in the trunk, reports the New York Daily News.
After pulling over Anna Boyle of Woodinville, Wash., the trooper noticed that she was acting nervously for what would otherwise have been a routine traffic infringement. This prompted the trooper to investigate the car more closely where they then found evidence of methamphetamine, traces of heroin, several types of prescription pills and drug paraphernalia.
It was then that the officer noticed a “thumping sound” coming from the trunk. On investigation he was shocked to find three young children in the boot along with the family dog. The rear seat of the car was being used to carry a guitar, backpack and snowboard. A collection of shoes was also strewn on the floor and rubbish, all of which would have ideally been located in the trunk where the children and the family pet were stowed instead.
Boyle and her fianc√© Aaron Johnson, who also smelled of cannabis, claimed that the children must have crawled through the ski port into the trunk. “The trooper does not know how it could be possible they were ever in the front, as there were so many items and no car seats for one, let alone three, kids,” said a statement issued by Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary.
Leary also noted that the 2007 Nissan Sentra was a black color and that the sun was out, making the trunk particularly hot and potentially endangering the lives of the children and the pet as well. Boyle’s 8-year-old daughter, her two sons ages 7 and 5 had also told the police that they had not eaten since the evening before. Following the arrest of Boyle and Johnson, the trooper took the children to McDonalds for a feed before the children were placed into the custody of Child Protective Services.
Police have filed drug charges against Boyle and Johnson, although were yet to file charges relating to the children.
