thinkaboutit - yes I'm in the car business. The liberal media tried to make it seem like it was the economy that destroyed Bill Heard's stores. This is turn to a certain extent. Bill Heard has been doing alot of things to "cook" their books with GMAC. All new car dealerships have their new vehicles "floored" with major lenders, some with their captives like GMAC & some with other major banks. In other words, these banks essentially loan the dealer the money to have all of these vehicles in inventory, in turn the dealer pays interest on said inventory. These banks have incentives for turning inventory quickly and other monetary incentives they pay dealers who successfully manage their inventory. When you pull shanigans with this bank, such as increasing someone income or not paying off vehicles that we're sold in order to keep your inventory at a certain level to get a kick back, you can fall out of trust with them quickly. Now try to find a lender that's going to loan you 100's of millions of dollars worth of inventory. A decent sized domestic new car dealer usually floors around $15 million, $15 mill x 13 stores = $195 milliion. If you can't floor your cars, you get to write a really big check. With that being said, Mr. Heard is in his later years in life, times are tough, $195 million is a lot of money (I don't care how much you've got), and I'm sure there will be a lot of law suits coming soon. He just said screw it, I've been screwing over people for years, let's go out with a bang and get them all at once. You had employees that went to a meeting on Monday and were told "everything is fine, this is a profitable store. They may close down some of the lesser producing stores like the one in Phoenix the other day, but your job is safe". This was the kind of BS that they're corporate office told their managment to tell the employees, then at around 2pm on wednesday a conference call to those very same people telling them "close the doors!"

I know a few people who have been in and out of some of Bill Heard's stores. They turn a blind eye to what's going on as long as it improves their bottomline. They don't discriminate who they are screwing over....they'll take advantage of customers or employees just the same. As far as I'm concerned, it's "car"ma coming back and biting him in the butt for everything that he's done.

That being said, there is always a bad apple at every dealership that will ruin the stores reputation if they're not found quickly enough and fired. But there are stores that are dishonest from the top to the bottom. Unfortuneatly, the consumers will tell 100 people about the bad experience they had and the good experiences are just status quo.

Thinkaboutit, any business can fold if they don't operate properly. Look at K-Mart. Back when I was a kid, it was crappy, but it was still popular. The minute the employees stopped caring about K-Mart and started caring about themselves, that's when things changed. Bill Heard was the same way. The people were looking for a quick buck. Midas (at least in Vegas) may be heading down the same road. If we all don't shape up and start caring about our companies, we will all fall down. Companies get bad reputations because of how they treat customers.

And again, this isn't the cause of the auto makers. This is the cause of the shady sales people and bad business practices of one dealership conglomerate. Like DesertDweller said, there are a lot of good dealers in town. Desert dealerships have been great to me and others, along with Findlay and Towbin dealerships (except Towbin Infinity had one particular sales person that refused to listen to the customer needs). Gaudin Ford has been decent to me in the past, and so was Friendly Ford. Some people are still doing well, despite all the bad things happening. This is because they are honest and good, and the old fashioned principles are good.

No matter what, good business is good business. All those that did bad business are hurting right now. Those that change may make it. Those that don't will ultimately fall. Hopefully, none of the good business practitioners will fall, but there may be some unfortunate ones. This just shows that good business is good.

I want to know if any of you have actually worked in the car business, and either way this is terrible news for our economy,no matter what your personal views are of the company. And for those that work in the car business this is all they are seeing, all over the place.......just sad.

Beastus - you are right most of the dealers in Vegas are pretty shady. But, after dealing with a lot of them, I can tell you that there still are some good ones in town. You can lump all of the Desert and United stores in with them. But you should put Towbin at the top of the list! Never had any problems with either Gaudin Ford, Ford Country, or any of the Findlay stores.

Desert Driver is right. Bill Heard in Vegas was full of @$$holes. Seriously. I did a lot of business with them in a different way: they were MY client. And they did everything they could to screw up the deal. That's why they folded. No one I know that purchased from them ever went back. It's not GM's fault, but the sales people's fault. I'm not sad to see that place close, but I am sad that some of those sales people will be trying to get jobs at good dealerships.

I will admit, though, that Jessica sure looked great on the commercials...

For the most part, the dealerships in Vegas try to rip everyone off. If you're in Vegas, I'd recommend heading to St. George, UT to purchase a vehicle. However, the Findlay group (not Shack Findlay) tends to do well for a reason. They seem to be pretty decent. And if they do rip you off, you don't notice...

Bill Heard Chevrolet in Vegas is one of the shadiest dealerships ever. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!!! They so tried to rip me off on a Corvette. They marked it up $10,000 and wouldn't budge. Findlay Chevrolet across town had a similar Corvette and gave me an awesome deal (well below sticker)! However, the Vette is a piece of crap. (My attempt at trying to help out the US economy). Although not as fast, I should've kept my 911. Europeans, especially the Germans, make the best cars. Americans make junk. I bet GM won't have a dual-clutch transmission for 7 more years, if they come out with one at all. What is up with leaf springs ont the Corvette? That's technology hundreds of years olds. Roman chariots used them. I'm looking forward to trying out the new 911 with direct injection and PDK. I'll wait a couple years for people to shake out the PDK and maybe get another 911.
