'Z06ified', the use of "DNA" was in concert with the brother analogy ... and being fat, while a tiny part of DNA, still doesn't hold this monster back.

'CleanGTO', I can handle all opinions based on FACT, like MINE, but I can't handle posts like #52 where all three points are useless, worthless typed characters. My calculation was using the three seconds mentioned by you and 'Kanucko', which is calculated correctly, and shows that it is neglible. As for being a prick, post #52, point three, tells all who the prick is ... if the shoe fits ...

Impulsive: Welcome to the Internet. Can't handle the personal opinions of others? Especially ones supported by fact? Take your calculator you used to figure your "time delta", and go over previous numbers again. Oh, and don't be a prick...you'll live longer.

What's everybody getting worked up about with the GTR V-Spec beating the ZR1? I think we've all come to the conclusion that the near ZR1 eclipsing, recent run was on auto cross tires, and not similar to the stock ones the ZR1 was using. Otherwise, the GTR is more than 10 seconds slower than the stock ZR1!

There's no argument that the ZR1 will even be faster than the GTR V-Spec, unless they can shave about 13 seconds... and then GM might come back with more experienced drivers, and better tires.

"Big fucking deal … the GTR DNA is better than the ‘Vette’s DNA … "

Impulsive - DNA? The GT-R's DNA is from a FAT ASS. As impressive as its performance is, its at least 500 lbs. heavier than it should be. Nissan knows it too, which is why they are working on shedding some weight for the V-spec model. Most of the GT-R's DNA is from the G35 Coupe (Skyline), which shares similar dimensions. It's even built on the same assembly line as the G35. A decent bloodline for a GT cruiser, but too heavy for a sports car or a supercar.

The ZR-1's DNA is exclusive to the Corvette. The Corvette was engineered and designed from scratch to be a sports car, and a super car. It didn't have to borrow a platform, frame, or major components from any other car. If you ever get to see a cut-away of the frame of the Corvette, you'll see what I mean, and you'll see the difference. It's incredibly strong and light weight. And the Corvette's DNA is based on over 50 years of racing Corvettes, including the dominating C6-R Corvette race program. The GT-R doesn't have this lengthy heritage or racing pedigree. It's mostly been a Japanese tuner's wet dream.

The CORVETTE has a rarely considered reputation for being a moving "target".

"The car that was it was two years ago is NOT the car it is today".

The C4 epitomizes this. Over its 13 year lifespan, it evolved from a two-seat muscle car to just a hair short of the C5, in the ZR-1 and the Grand Sport. Having defeated Japan's best at that time either with sheer speed, or a degree of agility still more muscle car than sports car is proof positive to this.

Facing ever changing and mounting competition, The C5 did not stick around long (A shame as I liked that body style). The C6 continues to evolve in the face of competitors.

Even if the GT-R Vspec can, "Lot Stock", beat the ZR-1 this year it may find itself being schooled by a revised, at that point "Lot Stock", C6 ZO6 the following year. Or just shut out entirely by the "Standard" C7, if not a C7 Z06.

This is very much unlike many benchmark cars like the 911, and some noticeable European and Japanese, sports and super cars, which get built and don't get the regular and substantive that the CORVETTE gets.

But then we are comparing an AWD car against a RWD car. There is a reason why the rules. But the fastest cars ever at Nurburgring are all RWD and not nearly as teched-out as the GT-R. So it is not unrealistic that the GT-R may not be as good as advertised and a GT-R36 would have to look to beat the C7... and keep beating it? Having the come back every other year with very substantive improvements? Never being a "finished" product? Or just make a solid punch only to fade away after a couple of years as the CORVETTE and the rest upgrade and adapt within a couple of years (Remembering it took NiSSAN about 10 years to roll this one out?

Or would than have to fall on a 450Z, the rumored V8 Z-car coming soon?

Kanucko (#51),

I would also want a full listing of the running gear used.

Frequently we hear the term "stock" but more often than not the cars being run have some notable modification, like tire swaps, re-tuned suspensions and so on. There is still the question of whether the GT-R really ran "Lot Stock", the way it was run is the way it was bought is the way it left the factory, or it it was modified... and that includes anything including something as dismissible but incredibly important as tires.

Nine seconds is an awful lot to knock off without some modifications and if the GT-R35 did do it totally stock, why don't they just out and say so, with pictures of the car that did it.? The Implication is that the GT-R35 that cut 7min29sec was not "Lot Stock" and did take the step of at least using "R"-compound or racing tires, or was, in fact a pre-production Tune of the V-spec. You don't officially log a time just cruising around the track. So something is up here.

But yes, I would like the environmental variation removed from the track tests and have these cars all run, Rally style, offset starts, the same day, and at more than one track. The same driver may not be the best choice, as each car will have a different character and the only thing using the same driver will do is show which car the driver liked more. Plus the driver's fatigue can effect results as well.

'Rafa', I assumed it was self-explanatory ... seems you agree that there are many monkeys here ... 'cleanGTO' is an example ... 3 seconds on a 7.5 minute track is a 0.666% time delta. That can be attributed to many things. Do like 'Kanucko' suggested and let's see a better comparison.

For the tests to be closer to fair. They should be done on the same day, same conditions and by the same driver. Spec V GTR should be able to best the ZR-1's time though. Especially if the GTR is only 3 seconds back.

I think the NSX and the LF should give up and worry about other things than the 'ring time.

beatusmongous, I was never more succesful than when I had my '71 Beetle with autocross-style dropped front end, painted steel rims, headlamp grills and primer stripes, but I think that had more to do with being a fit 17-year-old surf lifeguard than the car. As you so rightly say, good times...
.
p.s. I hope you'll share the story of what you & 9 hot girls got up to in your van. I had 5 girls in the bug once, but there was no room left for naughtiness.

dollars to horsepower this car is pretty amazing i mean over 600 hp for only about 103000 that amazing but that is what corvettes are all about cheap fast easy to work on cars. i think this one lives up to the legacy of the ZL-1 C3 vette.
BTW who gives a crap about how to pronounce coupe or chassis. aluminium or aluminum. worrying about that stuff is asinine .
Also speculating on a car that is out yet is dumb while i am sure they'll do something to make the V-spec have a faster lap i am also sure that the LFA will be faster and so will the new NSX or the new McLaren. it's dumb. yes ,it is an American car so you'll bash it (because that is the popular thing to do), but look at the price for the car's it competes against then you'll see what a corvette is about.

Impulsive's @24

I think I can explain better what you wanted to say and by the way explain what's happening here (some things the Vette lovers haven't seen already)

Nissan GT-R (Which is the Base model) beats Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (Which isn't the base model but is the one the GT-R aims to)
Then Corvette ZR1 (Top of Version) beat the GT-R.
Let's see per how many secs the GT-R V-Spec (Top of Version ;) ) beats the ZR1.

Now using Impulsive's: Jap Lil' Bro beat American middle bro so American big bro came and beat Jap lil' bro, but now, my friends, Jap Big Bro is getting ready to punch...And all of us know what's the outcome.

deutschetouring1337, great point :-), with all respect, but corevette is just raw power without sophistication. 138HP is a 2.0 liter engine.

and while we're still on Nordschleife lap times.... 2.5 liter diesel van (Ford Transit), can lap the 'Ring in 10:08

Well, Got Handling, one thing is for sure, you can pick up more hot chicks at one time in the GT-R than you can in the Corvette or the Gallardo, due to the fact that it has four seats instead of two. But one shouldn't need a car to pick up chicks, even though it is fun. I picked up chicks in all different sorts of rides, including a '97 Trans Am, a PT Cruiser, a '76 Datsun 280Z, a '92 Ford Escort, and even an old '82 Dodge Ram Van. The van got 9 girls in it at one time, and all of them were hot. In my book, I think the van was the best vehicle for picking up chicks. Ah, good times, good times.

This whole "who's the King of the nurburgring" is starting to get old. I mean the new Cobalt SS Turbocharged is even on the gring (which I give props for a FWD car that also set a lap record) but yeah I'm starting to agree with everyone else. Just because your car gets the fastest ring time doesn't mean it's the best.

Sure a GT-R and a ZR1 will probably spank a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, hell maybe even a Bugatti or something... which for the price you can't beat, but that by far doesn't make the GTR or ZR1 better cars.

Also this was just as we all were predicting. GTR beats ZO6, ZR1 beats GTR, and the V-Spec will probably beat the ZO6.

However, yeah I also agree, switch to the R-compound tires, everyone else does it and yeah get the C6-R team here and that lap time will be much improved, but heck they may be holding that out for the V-Spec, LF-A, and NSX...

Bolex, the Viper may be amusing, but it takes more than horsepower to set a good time on the 'Ring. However the Viper would probably be more fun to own, (if it didn't catch fire, Top Gear viewers you know what I'm saying).
.
This is all a vanity exercise for the engineers, in the real world these laptimes are not what supercar buyers care about. Can you imagine anyone trading in their Gallardo (that's pronounce gigh (as in "high") -yardo America, please tell your musicians and journalists) for a Corvette just because the latter is quicker around a track. For most customers this is irrelevant, and if its bragging rights that matter, I'd rather be boasting about how many girls I'd picked up in my hand-crafted Italian sex-magnet than how fast a techy nerd had driven my bargain-basement-interior plasticar.

Thats pathetic, notice how everyone missed the Corvette has 138HP over the GTR and it only beat it by 3 seconds? With similiar weights thats just ridiculous to brag about it, shows you Nissan has an epoch making machine.

Many suspect that Nissan is not giving the true horsepower of the GT-R, which is why it as a chubby seemingly underpowered car is beating those with greater power to weight ratios.

Accept FACT and stop crying like a sucky baby.

The GTR is no longer the ring leader. Holy fucking buthurt shitwipe.

Well, I'd assume that Nissan's engineers will now make sure that the V-Spec beats this time, so a short lived victory at best. Impressive time non the less.

Big fucking deal ... the GTR DNA is better than the 'Vette's DNA ... the little brother beat the little brother and soon the big brother will beat the big brother.

To get excited that the big brother beat the little brother is pathetic. Accept FACT and stop acting like sucky babies.

Ha! I called it. So many people were saying the ZR-1 would never beat the GT-R. I always said B.S., the GT-R will get owned on the 'ring, and I was right.

If they really want to take the gloves off, they should put R-compound tires on (like Porsche does) when they run the 'ring, and put one of their best C6-R race drivers at the helm (like Ron Fellows for example). Porsche always puts their best P-car driver in the seat when they publish their 'ring times, so why sell yourself short.

I'm sure these GM engineers are great drivers, but I doubt they are better than the C6-R race team drivers.

Maybe they're sandbagging a little - as soon as someone beats this time, then they'll run it again with R-compound tires and a C6-R driver and beat it again.

@Blakkarr

The GT-R's lap was done on standard Dunlop runflats not some strange tire as you suggest. Nissan's press release is quite clear on that. http://www.gtrblog.com/index.php/2008/05/01/nissan-press-release-base-model-nissan-g

It would be interesting to see a GT-R's lap time on the same tires as the ZR-1. Either way congrats to the ZR-1 team for a job well done.
