VW recalls 25,594 Jettas for driveshaft issue

Adding to today's list of recalls, the National Highway Safety Administration and Volkswagen of America have announced the recall of 25,594 Jetta models. The recall includes 2006-2009 model year vehicles equipped with the 2.0L engine.

According to the NHTSA's Web site, the recall is due to a faulty drive shaft cover plate that could lead to a detached drive shaft. The screw contact plates on the drive shaft cover plate may not have been manufactured properly, resulting in improperly torqued screws. Over time, those screws could become loose, possibly resulting in the drive shaft becoming completely detached from the gearbox. Affected vehicles usually emit a knocking sound while in motion.

The NHTSA warns that a detached driveshaft could damage the vehicle's gearbox housing, resulting in an oil leak. The oil leak could increase the likelihood of a crash for the driver as well as other motorists.

VW dealers will inspect the screws and replace them if necessary at no charge. The recall is set to officially kick off on June 19th.
