Mercedes-Benz to offer AMG version of next B-Class

Mercedes-Benz to offer AMG version of next B-Class

Mercedes-Benz's AMG division has never turned its focus to the German automaker's compact models, but that will soon change as the tuning division will develop a high-performance version of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class.

Although AMG has never tried its hand at tuning Mercedes' more modest offerings, the performance division will turn its attention to the next-gen B-Class in order to attract younger buyers. The AMG version of the B-Class is expected to compete against vehicles like the Volkswagen Golf R32 and Audi S3.

Mercedes has yet to reveal all the details of its forthcoming B-Class AMG model, but expect the hot hatch to feature a high-horsepower four-cylinder engine. In keeping with the AMG tradition, the massaged B-Class will feature upgraded brakes, a sports suspension and a unique body kit.

Although the current B-Class - and even the B-Class AMG's intended competitors - isn't sold in the United States, the next-generation B-Class and its AMG variant will be available for U.S. consumption. The new B-Class is expected to launch in Europe in late 2011 with United States sales slated for shortly after. The AMG model will likely lag a few months behind.
