BMW exec confirms M 1-Series, twin-turbo V8 for M5

After months of rumors and spy shots, a top-ranking BMW official has finally confirmed that an M version of the 1-Series will make production.

We've heard plenty of rumors and seen a number of spy shots of BMW's long-rumored M1 over the last few months, but have yet to hear an official confirmation from the German automaker. However, a BMW exec has spoken out on the topic, confirming the existence of such a project.

Speaking with Germany's Auto News, BMW boss Dr. Kay Segler confirmed that an M version of the company's 1-Series is in the works. Segler revealed the M version of the 1-Series will launch sometime in 2011, although the car won't wear the famed M1 nameplate. The executive stopped short of giving the car's official name, but indicated it would be called the 135 M.

No performance figures were given, but the 135 M's turbocharged inline-six engine is expected to put out between 330 and 350 horsepower. Suspension and brake upgrades will also be part of the 1-Series M package.

Continuing on the M topic, Segler confirmed the BMW M5 will swap its current V10 for the company's twin-turbocharged V8. That mill makes 555 horsepower in the X5 M, but will generate between 580 and 600 horsepower under the hood of the next M5. Despite that power jump, the M5 should cut its CO2 emission by about 25 percent.
