GM's Opel mulling allroad-like wagon?

The Insignia Country Tourer might be unveiled in Frankfurt.

A new report finds that General Motors' Opel division is developing a more rugged variant of its Insignia Sports Tourer station wagon. The Insignia is the Buick Regal's Euro-market sibling.

Tentatively called Insignia Country Tourer, the wagon will closely follow Audi's allroad recipe in order to take on the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack and the Peugeot 508 RXH. Outside, it will wear a more aggressive design thanks to brushed aluminum trim on both ends, plastic cladding on the rocker panels and over the four wheel arches and a slightly raised ground clearance. Brushed aluminum roof rails and a set of model-specific alloy wheels will finish off the look.

Inside, the Country Tourer will offer leather upholstery and a wide assortment of high-tech equipment in order to justify its higher price. An infotainment system that combines the wagon's entertainment, navigation and Bluetooth-based connectivity functions into a single eight-inch touch screen mounted on the center stack will come standard.

Both two- and four-wheel drive variants will be offered, and buyers will be able to pick from a large selection of gasoline- and diesel-burning four-cylinder engines.

If the rumor proves true, more information about the Opel Insignia Country Tourer will be available in the weeks leading up to next September's Frankfurt Motor Show.
