Lyft to offer autonomous taxis at CES 2018

CES will be a sneak peek at the future.

Lyft, one of the leading ride hailing firms, announced this week that it will be offering rides in self-driving cabs to those attending the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas later this month.

Lyft is partnering with Aptiv to offer the autonomous taxis — Lyft will be in charge of the smart dispatching while Aptiv will provide the necessary autonomous technology. Riders will be able to select their destination from more than 20 locations on the Vegas strip.

"Lyft's mission is to build the world's best transportation ecosystem in partnership with the most advanced self-driving technology and automotive companies," said Lyft CEO Logan Green. "Partnering with Aptiv for our open platform brings us one step closer to making our vision a reality. Together, we will define the future and we look forward to taking this monumental first step in Las Vegas at CES 2018."

Although the Lyft taxis will be operating in autonomous mode, there will be a person behind the wheel should something go awry. An "in-car host” will also be along for the ride to explain how the technology works.

The self-driving promotion will run January 9-12.
