Pininfarina launches stand-alone luxury EV brand

The company\'s first model will be an electric hypercar due out in 2020.

Pininfarina, the design house best-known for styling Ferraris, has officially established a new electric vehicle luxury car brand. The announcement was made late last week by Pininfarina parent Mahindra & Mahindra.

The new company, known as Automobili Pininfarina, says it will launch its first production vehicle by 2020. According to Automobili Pininfarina, which is separate from the Pininfarina Spa design division, its first vehicle will be a pure electric hypercar capable of accelerating from 0-60 in under 2 seconds.

Details are scarce, but Michael Perschke, head of the new brand, describes the forthcoming EV as "a true hypercar.” Perschke also promises a 300 miles range and a price tag of about 2 million euros, according to Automotive News. Not surprisingly, the unnamed electric hypercar will be penned by Pininfarina Spa.

Although Pininfarina's first vehicle will be an all-out hypercar, the company plans to mostly focus on electric luxury SUVs to rival the Bentley Bentayaga and Land Rover Range Rover. It remains unknown when Pininfarina will launch its first SUV, but the company says it should cost about 150,000 euros.

Mahindra & Mahindra purchased a controlling stake in Pininfarina in 2015.
