Polestar prices upcoming Polestar 1 hybrid coupe

The Polestar 1 won\'t be cheap.

Polestar, the newly formed electric performance division of Volvo, has announced pricing for its first-ever standalone model. The announcement was made at this week's Beijing Motor Show.

Polestar says its Polestar 1 hybrid coupe will retail from $155,000 in the United States. That price point will put the Polestar 1 right in the middle of some stiff competition. A Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe can be had for a comparatively cheap $112,400, and a Porsche 911 Turbo starts at $161,800. Of course neither of those vehicles offers a hybrid powertrain, but an Acura NSX does, and it carries a base price of $156,000.

Polestar says it will also offer a subscription service for Polestar 1 ownership, but the company has not announced the details of that program.

Polestar says 7,000 potential customers have expressed interest in the Polestar 1, but the company stopped short of revealing how many of those people have actually plunked down cash to reserve a spot in line.

"We have seen a strong initial response from our first customers,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer at Polestar. "This gives us confidence that our brand has a bright future. In 2019 already we will launch our next car, the Polestar 2 - a mid-sized fully-electric car which is well developed in its engineering phase. We will follow that up with the Polestar 3, a stunning electric SUV with a beautiful aerodynamic silhouette that is already advanced in its design phase.”

The Polestar 1 will use a gas-electric powertrain rated at 600 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque. A gas engine will be responsible for spinning the front wheels while a pair of electric motors will power the back axle. Polestar says the hybrid will be able to cover 93 miles on electric power alone.

Polestar will produce the Polestar 1, along with the upcoming Polestar 2 and 3 models, at a new Polestar Production Centre located in Chengdu, China.
