VW recalls Tiguan over panoramic sunroof fires

Moisture in the LED module for the sunroof ambient light bar may short-circuit, causing a fire.

Volkswagen has issued a recall for the 2018 Tiguan, addressing an issue that can lead to fires in vehicles equipped with panoramic sunroofs.

After receiving several reports of an 'overheating incident' and a fire, the company launched an investigation that traced the issue to a short-circuit in the LED module that creates ambient light in the front of the sunroof frame.

"If the recall condition is present, vehicle occupants may notice a burning odor or smoke coming from the front of the sunroof frame," the recall documents note.

The campaign affects around 45,500 units, all from the 2018 model year. Service technicians will simply install aluminum tape to the sunroof LED module to prevent water intrusion.
