SpaceX to fly private passenger around the Moon

The mystery passenger will be launched aloft in SpaceX' enormous BFR rocket.

SpaceX has announced plans to launch the world's first private passenger flight around the Moon.

The company describes the venture as an "important first step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of traveling to space."

The mystery guest will be carried aloft in SpaceX enormous BFR rocket. The Big Falcon Rocket made its maiden voyage earlier this year, launching an original Tesla Roadster into an orbit around Mars.

SpaceX apparently has much bigger plans than Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, both of which are starting with suborbital flights taking private passengers just beyond the edge of space.

The last manned mission to the Moon occurred nearly 50 years ago. Unfortunately, the SpaceX passenger won't get a chance to step off the spacecraft onto the surface of the Moon.

SpaceX will announce the mystery passenger and more details of the launch on September 17.
