MG introduces electric crossover

The firm has come a long way since the Midget.

Once known for making driver-focused, back-to-the-basics roadsters, MG has introduced an electric crossover named eZS at the 2018 Guangzhou auto show taking place in China.

The eZS is based on the ZS, a gasoline-powered model already available on the Chinese market. British magazine Autocar points out development work isn't done yet so the firm -- which is owned by China-based SAIC -- hasn't announced full specifications. However, we know it will have about 150 horsepower and offer up to 268 miles on a single charge.

The battery pack will come from a Chinese supplier also working with BMW. It will presumably be a lithium-ion unit but additional details (like its capacity) won't be announced until a later date.

The eZS looks almost exactly like its gasoline-powered counterpart; electric cars are becoming the norm in China due to tight government regulations enforced to reduce air pollution so there's little need to make them stand out. Careful observers will simply notice the MG emblem now has a blue background. The story is the same inside, where the biggest change is a power gauge in lieu of a tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The MG eZS will go on sale in China in 2019. Pricing hasn't been announced yet. As of writing, MG hasn't announced plans to sell the model outside of its home country. It could appear in some parts of Europe, including England, but it stands little to no chance of going on sale in the United States.
