Everything from the 2018 LA auto show [Video]

Here's one hot lap of the 2018 LA auto show.

The 2018 Los Angeles auto show is officially a wrap. This year's kick off to the domestic auto show season was a busy one, with several automakers debuting highly anticipated new vehicles -- there was an all-new Porsche 911, a new Jeep pickup and even a couple of new electric vehicles from a Michigan-based company. There was a lot to see, but we've got you covered with this full wrap-up from the 2018 LA show.

Mazda3

Mazda used the 2018 LA auto show to show off its latest Mazda3 compact car. Like before, the 3 will be offered as both a sedan and hatchback, but styling has been brought up to modern standards.

Initially the 3 will be powered by a range of four-cylinder gas engines, but Mazda says a diesel will eventually be on offer. Front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual will come standard, but buyers will also have the option of all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic.

Other highlights of the 2020 Mazda3 include an 8.8-inch infotainment screen and the latest semi-autonomous driving aids.

Rivian R1T, R1S

Up-start electric vehicle maker Rivian used the 2018 LA auto show to introduce a pair of battery-powered utility vehicles. Both models utilize the same basic chassis, but wear different bodies.

The R1T takes the form of a typical four-door pickup truck, but there's a lot more than meets the eye. Since the R1T doesn't have an engine, it has a front trunk to supplement the storage space in its bed. There's also a clever storage area that spans the width of the truck just behind the cabin. Rivian says the space is large enough to easily accommodate a golf bag.

For those that don't need the versatility of a truck, Rivian is also rolling out the R1S SUV. Unlike the sleekly styled Tesla Model X, the R1S is styled more like a conventional SUV with slab sides and a two-box design.

Both Rivian models boasts 750 horsepower and around 400 miles of total range. And, unlike most electric vehicles, the R1T and R1S are designed to go off-road. In fact, Rivian says its EVs can ford up to 3 feet of water.

Rivian expects to begin production of its EVs at a plant in Illinois in 2020.

Audi e-tron GT concept

Audi took a direct shot at Tesla at the 2018 LAAS with an all-new electric sedan concept. Called the e-tron GT, the Model S rival is penned in the style of a four-door coupe and boasts a range of nearly 250 miles. Audi says the e-tron GT concept is capable of accelerating from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. Look for the e-tron GT concept to make the leap to production in 2020.

Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro

Mercedes-AMG introduced a new GT variant at the LA show that should appeal to the track-day crowd. Known as the GT R Pro, the latest AMG hot rod boasts a race-tuned suspension, improved aerodynamics and a 577 horsepower twin-turbo V8. The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro will land in dealer showrooms next year (and racetracks all over shortly thereafter).

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

Subaru brought back its Crosstrek Hybrid at the 2018 LA show. Although the name is familiar, the Crosstrek Hybrid's drivetrain isn't -- it's now a plug-in unit that can travel up to 17 miles on battery power alone. The Crosstrek plug-in can also operate as a normal hybrid, delivering 480 miles of total range. The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid will go on sale in December with a base price of about $35,000.

Honda Passport

Honda traveled to the 2018 LA auto show to introduce its new Passport mid-size SUV. The recipe for the Passport is fairly straightforward -- it's essentially a two-row version of the Pilot with about 6-inches lopped off from its rear overhang. Honda also lifted the Passport by 1-inch to give it better ground clearance.

Set to slot between the CR-V and the Pilot in the Honda lineup, the Passport uses a 3.5L V6 mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system will also be on offer. The Pilot is scheduled to go on sale during the first part of 2019.

Toyota Prius AWD

In order to boost the appeal of its popular hybrid in snowy climates, Toyota brought out an all-wheel drive version of its Prius during the LA auto show. The 2019 Prius AWD uses a separate electric motor at the back to power the vehicle's rear wheels. The AWD system can engage at speeds up to 43mph. The AWD system does ding the Prius' overall fuel economy, but not by much -- it still returns 50mpg in mixed driving.

Porsche 911

It may be hard to tell, but the Porsche 911 is all-new for the 2020 model year. Although styling is largely the same, the newest 911 is a little bit bigger than the model it replaces. It's also more powerful, with the Carrera S models rated at 443 horsepower. The 2020 Porsche 911 is on sale now with the first deliveries expected in mid-2019.

Jeep Gladiator

At long last a pickup truck has returned to the Jeep lineup. This time around Jeep is calling its truck Gladiator, which was the name of a Wagoneer-based pickup back in the day. The modern-day truck is based on the Wrangler and shares most of the SUV's off-road hardware, including available front and rear lockers. And since the Gladiator is Wrangler-based, it also offers buyers a removable top. Power will initially come from a 3.6L V6, but a torquey diesel will eventually join the mix.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid

For the first time ever, Toyota is offering a hybrid version of its Corolla hatchback. The Corolla's hybrid system pairs a 1.8L gas engine with a couple of electric motors, combining for a total output of 121 horsepower. Fuel economy figures have not been announced, but the Corolla Hybrid is expected to return at least 50mpg in mixed driving.

Lincoln Aviator

Lincoln used the glitzy background of Los Angeles to introduce its all-new Aviator mid-size SUV. The Aviator rides on an all-new rear-wheel drive platform that's also available with all-wheel drive. The standard engine for the Aviator is a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 rated at 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. A plug-in hybrid using the same engine will also be available. It'll make 450 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque.

Kia Soul

Kia's funky box on wheels made its debut in LA with new looks and a more powerful EV model. The regular 2020 Kia Soul uses a 147 horsepower 2.0L four-cylinder that's mated to a CVT for the first time. A turbocharged 1.6L paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic will also be available.

Meanwhile, output for the Soul EV climbs to 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque for 2020. Range estimates haven't been announced.

On the tech front, the 2020 Soul benefits from an available 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and the latest semi-autonomous features.

Kia Niro EV

The Soul wasn't the only electric Kia on display at the LA show. The company also introduced an electric version of its Niro crossover. The Niro EV is powered by the same 201 horsepower electric motor found in the Soul EV. Backed by a 64kWh lithium-ion battery, Kia says the Niro EV is good for 239 miles on a single charge.

And speaking of charge, a fast-charger system can provide up to 100 miles of range in as little as 30 minutes. If you're using a standard 240-volt source, a full charge requires 9.5 hours on the plug.

Nissan Murano, Maxima

Nissan introduced revised versions of its Murano SUV and Maxima sedan at the 2018 LA auto show. Both models receive minor updates to their exterior styling, including new grille and light designs. Inside the changes are mostly limited to materials, but Nissan also added a few more available safety systems for the 2019 model year.

Hyundai Palisade

Hyundai's SUV onslaught continued in LA with the introduction of the all-new Palisade. Set to replace last year's Santa Fe model, the Palisade will occupy the top spot in Hyundai's ever-growing SUV lineup.

The Palisade will offer three-rows of seating and compete against vehicles like the Subaru Ascent and Toyota Highlander. The Palisade is motivated by a 290 horsepower 3.8L V6. An eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive come standard; all-wheel drive will be an optional extra. Expect to see the Hyundai Palisade in dealer showrooms sometime next year.

VW ID Buzz Cargo

The past meets the future with the Volkswagen ID Buzz Cargo concept. VW's LA show piece was a retro-themed electric cargo van that might actually make production within a few years. The commercial van offers up to 340 miles of range, and should be useful for professionals thanks to its 230-volt onboard hookup for power tools.

BMW 8 Series

BMW used the 2018 LA auto show to revive its 8 Series nameplate. Available in coupe and convertible forms, the 8 Series boasts slick styling, a luxurious interior and a 523 horsepower V8 engine. The 8 Series will land in showrooms in March with a starting price of about $120,000, giving you a few months to get your finances in order.
