Porsche confirms the 911 is going hybrid after 2022

There may be two gasoline-electric 911s.

The rumors of a hybrid Porsche 911 were true. August Achleitner, the head of the 911 model line, has confirmed the new, 992-generation 911 (pictured) unveiled recently at the 2018 Los Angeles auto show was developed with electrification in mind. It's not right around the corner, though.

Speaking to British magazine Auto Express, Achleitner confirmed the arrival of the first-ever gasoline-electric 911. "It will be the next evolution of this car, that means at least four years away from today," he added. Assuming Porsche's plans don't change, the 911 hybrid will make its debut in 2022.

Achleitner stopped short of providing technical specifications. However, he suggested the hybrid will be positioned as a high-performance model, not as the efficiency champ of the line-up.

"When I am thinking about a hybrid version of the 911, I do not mean like the Panamera and the Cayenne. I mean like the 919 Le Mans car," he clarified.

Auto Express adds Porsche could electrify two versions of the 911. The first one would be positioned as an alternative to the 911 Carrera. The second one would sit at the top of the range; it will be on the same level as the 911 Turbo. The sold-out 918 Spyder and the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid both demonstrate what Porsche can do with hybrid technology.

Electrification add weight, which inevitably compromises performance and handling. However, Auto Express spoke to Porsche insiders who claim every technical problem has been solved, thanks in part to lessons learned from the 918 Spyder program.
