Boring Co teases Los Angeles demo tunnel ahead of launch

The company is giving rides in a Model X that is centered in the tunnel via a retractable wheel system.

Elon Musk's Boring Co is celebrating the grand opening of its demonstration tunnel beneath Los Angeles streets.

Musk preceded the launch event by teasing a few details on Twitter, showing a Model X that is driving itself through the tunnel under its own power but remains centered via a retractable wheel system.

"The demo ride takes you in *same* car on road, down elevator, zips through tunnel using guide wheels, up elevator at destination & then drives on normal roads back to start," he says.

An actual public-transit tunnel will have passenger pods that carry pedestrians and cyclists through the tunnel. Boring Co envisions the system being shared between EVs and passenger pods, both traveling at speeds of up to 150 mph.

The demo tunnel has allowed the startup to dodge an environmental review, which is currently being conducted for official projects in LA and Chicago.
