Audi prepping electric sedan to take on Tesla Model S P100D

Audi's Tesla rival will debut later this year.

Audi is aiming to top the performance of the Tesla Model S P100D with its upcoming E-tron GT sedan, a new report reveals.

Now that Audi has officially unveiled the E-tron electric SUV, the automaker is turning its attention to an electric sedan that will use the same basic architecture as the Porsche Taycan. Known as the E-tron GT, Audi is benching marking the EV against the highest performing Tesla Model S.

In normal mode, the Tesla Model S P100D can accelerate from 0-60 in about 4 seconds. The Model S can also hit a top speed of 155mph. Audi is aiming to best both of those marks, according to Autocar. However, the Model S P100D can also accelerate from 0-60 in 2.2 second when using Ludicrous mode; it remains unknown if the E-tron GT will offer a similarly silly acceleration setting.

The Audi E-tron GT will also be the first Audi electric to use a 350kW fast charger. That system promises to deliver an 80 percent charge in less than 12 minutes.

The Audi E-tron GT isn't expected to go on sale until 2020, but the automaker will debut the electric sedan this year at the Los Angeles auto show.
