The S4 is a sportier version of Audi's popular A4. It offers a solid mix of power and luxury at a relatively reasonable price.
The S4 ratchets up the performance quotient with turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The six-cylinder sends the S4 from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
Audi's time-tested quattro all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission both come standard. Suspension, steering, and braking tweaks complement the powertrain modifications.
It takes a well-trained eye to tell the S4 apart from the A4. Squint and you'll notice a more muscular-looking front bumper, an S4-specific grille, aluminum-look mirror caps, quad exhaust outlets, and a discreet spoiler on the trunk lid. It also rides on 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, there's a three-spoke sport steering wheel, shift paddles, and diamond-stitched seats.
Standard and Optional Features
Audi offers the S4 in two trim levels named Premium Plus and Prestige, respectively.
The Premium plus model comes standard with a seven-inch touch screen, a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 19 speakers, HD Radio, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless start and entry, parking sensors on both ends, rain-sensing wipers, a combination of leather and Alcantara upholstery, 12-way adjustable front seats that are heated, three-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, ambient lighting, aluminum exterior trim, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The Prestige trim adds navigation, Audi's virtual cockpit, a head-up display, handwriting-recognition technology, and a HomeLink transceiver.
The list of optional equipment includes carbon fiber inlays, rear side airbags, 19-inch alloy wheels, and several option packages. Notably, navigation is offered at an extra cost on the entry-level trim.
The Cold Weather package adds heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The S Sport package brings red brake calipers, a sport-tuned adaptive suspension, and a sport rear differential.
Every S4 comes standard with front, side, and curtain airbags plus knee airbags for the front passenger. The model also offers stability control and traction control.
The S4's most direct competitor is the Mercedes-AMG C43. Buyers can also look at the BMW 340i.
