BlackBerry's QNX operating system will underpin Baidu's Apollo open platform for autonomous vehicles.

Chinese internet giant Baidu has partnered with BlackBerry to develop autonomous vehicle technology.

Baidu is already working on an open platform for autonomous cars, known as Apollo, that combines cloud services, an open software stack, reference hardware and vehicle platforms.

BlackBerry may be best known for its once-popular smartphones, but the company's QNX operating system now plays a significant role in the automotive industry.

"BlackBerry QNX has established itself as the OS platform for safety-certified production-based systems," says Baidu's intelligent driving group general manager, Li Zhenyu. "Together, we will work toward a technological and commercial ecosystem for autonomous driving, intelligent connectivity, and intelligent traffic systems."
