The i8 Roadster will be based on the updated version of the i8.

BMW has published a teaser video that previews the on-again, off-again i8 Roadster. Posted on various social media channels, the video confirms what we already knew about the topless i8. The part of the roof that's right above the seats gets replaced by a folding soft top, and the Roadster receives the double-hump treatment first seen on the i Vision Future Interaction concept that debuted last year during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

The convertible will be based on the updated version of the i8, though the visual changes will be minor and evolutionary at best. Expect new-look lights on both ends, redrawn bumpers, and new alloy wheel designs.

Bigger changes will be found under the skin. As we previously reported, range will grow by 50 percent thanks to a bigger, 10-kWh battery pack. Upgrades to both the electric motor and the three-cylinder engine will push the hybrid system's output beyond the 400-horsepower mark.

The caption accompanying the teaser confirms we'll see the i8 Roadster in the metal for the first time next year. We wouldn't be surprised to see it debut in March during the 2018 Geneva Auto Show, though nothing is official at this point. Regardless, it will arrive in showrooms in time for the 2019 model year.
