If the slip-joint fails, the car will lose power to the rear axle.

BMW has issued a recall for its M3 sedan and M4 coupe and convertible from the 2015 and 2016 model years.A small batch of just 42 units may have left the factory without grease injected in the the driveshaft slip-joint. Consequently, the slip joint is prone to failure over time.

"f the slip-joint fails, there would be a loss of power to the rear axle and therefore the vehicle would stop moving, increasing the risk of a crash," the recall documents warn.

Service technicians will inspect the components and completely replace the driveshaft if it was not properly greased. The company expects to begin fixing vehicles on January 8.

It is unclear if the defect has been associated with any accidents or injuries.
