Cadillac HQ to return to Michigan [Updated]

Cadillac will return to Michigan after just three years in New York City.

[Update: Automotive News is reporting that Cadillac's new HQ will be located in Warren, Mich.]

Cadillac's New York City experiment is coming to an end after just three years, division president Steve Carlisle confirmed Wednesday, citing the logistical difficulties of having one of its brands headquartered so far away.

Carlisle confirmed the upcoming return in an interview with The Wall Street Journal (subscription) just months after the company indicated it had no plans to relocate following the departure of former CEO Johan De Nysschen.

The brand's move to New York City was controversial, with some praising it as an opportunity for Cadillac to distance itself from its Rust Belt corporate hierarchy and others seeing it as an expensive boondoggle.

Cadillac's product development teams remained in Michigan, stretching the lines of communication between brand management and its engineers and program directors. Carlisle made note of this "inefficien[t]" arrangement when he confirmed the forthcoming relocation.

According to Automotive News, Cadillac's re-relocated headquarters will be in Warren, Mich., near GM's technical center.
