2019 Cadillac XT4

The XT4 is Cadillac's entrant into the ultra-competitive and still-evolving compact luxury CUV segment. It is an all-new model for Cadillac as it explores the space beneath its successful SUV lineup.

Overview

Although Cadillac was historically known as a producer of large luxury sedans, the realities of today's market have dictated that the storied American premium brand explore the booming crossover market in order to maintain the sort of volume necessary to remain a player in the luxury space.

The XT4 is an all-new entry designed to do just that. While Cadillac's previous efforts in the crossover space have effectively been ‘tweener models (falling between two conventional size classes so as to appeal broadly to buyers of both), GM's luxury brand is now fleshing out its portfolio with dedicated models for each segment.

The XT4 is a dedicated compact. It offers seating for five with space comparable to a midsize sedan, all-wheel-drive for any-weather capability, and plenty of added practicality and utility.

One great strength of crossovers is cargo space. Not only do they offer volume similar to a midsize sedan's trunk space, but they allow for more versatile use of that space thanks to the hatch configuration.

The XT4's cargo area offers 22.5 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up, or 48.9 cubes with them folded.

Powertrains

The Cadillac XT4 is offered with just one engine—a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Two powertrain configurations—front- and all-wheel-drive—are offered, and no matter which you pick, you get a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Front-wheel-drive models are estimated to deliver 25 MPG city, 30 highway and 27 combined. All-wheel-drive figures are not yet available.

Standard and optional equipment

As a luxury vehicle, the XT4 comes comfortably equipped in its most basic form. An eight-inch infotainment screen sits atop the dash, complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. Four USB ports and three 12-volt power outlets are standard, and 15-watt wireless charging is available as an option.

A driver select mode is also standard, and higher-trim models also incorporate an adaptive suspension which allows for customization of the drive experience or a set-and-forget automatic mode that changes on-the-fly based on road conditions and driver inputs.

Additional standard equipment on the XT4 includes LED lighting front and rear (with the exception of the headlights, where LEDs are only available as an optional upgrade)

Occupant safety

Cadillac XT4 models come equipped with extensive standard safety equipment, including front, side, head and knee airbags, along with stability control.

Advanced safety systems include adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, a rear-camera mirror, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and emergency braking assist.

The Cadillac XT4 competes directly against vehicles like the Audi Q3, Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC, Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1.
