Chevrolet to build Silverado's new Duramax diesel in Flintby Drew Johnson
The Silverado\'s new diesel engine will be Michigan-made.
General Motors has announced that it will build the 3.0L turbodiesel destined for the engine bay of the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado at the company's Flint engine plant.
GM spent more than $260 million updating the Flint plant — which currently builds a 1.4L engine for Chevy Cruze, Volt and Equinox — for production of the new Duramax engine line. GM hasn't released any official specs for the inline-six diesel, but the company has hinted at best-in-class performance and efficiency.
"The next-generation Silverado builds on the success of our current models, many of which are produced here in Flint. We are proud to expand the industry-leading diesel portfolio here in Vehicle City," said John Urbanic, Flint Engine Operations plant manager.
The Silverado will be Chevrolet's sixth diesel-powered vehicle offering, joining the Equinox, Cruze, Colorado, Express and Silverado HD. Chevy hasn't announced an on-sale date for the 2019 Silverado, but it should arrive in dealer showrooms later this year.
