FCA to use Maserati platform for next Dodge Challenger, Chargerby Drew Johnson
FCA is changing its strategy when it comes to future cars.
FCA had been planning to redesign its aging LX-based cars — the Dodge Challenger and Charger — on the same Giorgio platform that underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulia, but Automotive News says the company has had a change of heart. Instead, FCA will use the unibody chassis of the Maserati Ghibli as the starting point for the next-generation Challenger and Charger.
As a result of that decision, FCA will give its muscle cars an update in 2019 before the all-new models land in 2021. That 2019 update will focus heavily on reducing weight to improve fuel economy.
The fate of FCA's other LX car, the Chrysler 300, remains unknown at this time. It's possible that the 300 could adopt the Ghibli's platform, but we've also heard reports that the big sedan could shift to the front-wheel drive architecture that underpins the Chrysler Pacifica. Whatever the case, don't expect to see a new 300 for a few years.
FCA was planning to reintroduce its Barracuda nameplate as a two-door convertible, but that model is now up in the air thanks to the company's decision to switch platforms.
Although FCA has decided against using the Giorgio platform for its larger car offerings, the automaker will use the architecture for its Dodge Journey replacement. That model we be repositioned as a sporty two-row crossover. Production will move from Mexico to Italy. The next-generation Journey could launch as soon as 2019.
Dodge's three-row Durango will also be redesigned for 2019, but not much is known about that project.
