A surprising quick-detach steering wheel is a particularly concerning problem in a normal car.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the Ford Fusion, responding to complaints alleging problems with the steering wheel mount. The agency has received three complaints claiming the steering wheel fastening bolt became loose in vehicles from the 2014-2016 model years. All alleged the steering wheel became loose while the vehicle was underway.

"Two of the complainants reported that the bolt attaching the wheel to the steering column had to be re-tightened at a repair facility," the NHTSA said. "The third complainant alleged that while attempting to turn into a gas station, the steering wheel became completely detached from the steering column."

The agency is now evaluating the reports to determine if a deeper investigation is warranted.
