The Mustang has held the title for three straight years, with more than a third of its sales in global markets.
The Ford Mustang is claimed to have retained its global leadership position as the best-selling sports coupe.
Nearly 126,000 Mustang coupes and convertibles were distributed across 146 countries last year, according to data from IHS Markit.
"For years, Mustang was unobtainable for customers on most parts of the planet," says Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle. "It could only be found on TV or the internet, and now it rolls down streets from Beijing to São Paulo."
The US market accounted for a solid majority, with 81,866 of Ford's pony cars sold at home.
The Mustang is said to be particularly popular in China with 7,125 registrations, while the most popular global configuration is the GT trim powered by the iconic 5.0-liter V8.
As the sports coupe grows in popularity, Ford has decided to switch the face of its Nascar entry from the Fusion to the Mustang.
