Ford celebrates 10 millionth Mustangby Justin King
The milestone reinforces the Mustang\'s claim as America\'s best-selling sports car of the last 50 years.
Ford has kicked off a celebration for the Mustang after the 10 millionth unit rolled off the Flat Rock assembly line this week.
The milestone Mustang is a 2019 GT convertible in Wimbledon White with a 460-horsepower V8 and six-speed manual gearbox. The first serialized Mustang (VIN 001) produced in 1964 was the same color and model with a three-speed manual transmission and 164-horsepower V8.
Ford claims the Mustang is America's best-selling sports car over the past 50 years, based on an analysis of 1966-2018 new vehicle registrations tallied by IHS Markit. The iconic pony car is also said to lead global sports-car sales for three years straight.
"I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car - a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager," says Ford global markets president Jim Farley. "Mustang is a smile-maker in any language."
Ford is celebrating the milestone with employee celebrations at its Dearborn headquarters and its Flat Rock assembly plant, including flyovers from three World War II-era P-51 Mustang fighters.
