Ford Mustang California Special returns for 2019 model yearby Justin King
The package features a unique fading stripe, blacked-out grille, Performance Pack 1 splitter and special five-spoke wheels.
Ford has revived the Mustang California Special for the 2019 model year.
The original California Special is said to have roots in the original Mustang owners clubs and personalized orders from regional dealers. One popular example, inspired by the 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype, featured a blacked-out grille and fog lamps, with a side racing stripe that ended ahead of a new rear fender scoop.
The 2019 California Special takes inspiration from the original, featuring a fading stripe that traces from the '5.0' badge to the rear fender scoop. The front end features a dark grille and Performance Pack 1 splitter. Designers also created unique five-spoke painted machined wheels for the package.
Aside from the GT/CS model, the 2019 model year also brings rev matching for the 5.0-liter engine and six-speed manual gearbox. The 5.0's active exhaust has also trickled down to EcoBoost models.
Buyers can add a B&O Play sound system for the first time. The package includes a 10-channel amplifier, 12 speakers and 1,000 watts combined.
The first 2019 Mustangs will begin arriving in showrooms this summer.
