BMW's i3 gets more power, sporty suspension.

While BMW has been all over the news for its bolder, more impactful concept vehicles, it also had a bit of housekeeping to do at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In this case, that came in the form of the 2018 BMW i3 lineup. The updated EV is now available as the sporty i3s model, which we've focused on here. The i3s gets an upgraded motor, producing 184 horsepower and 199lb-ft of torque--up 14 and 15 over the base car, respectively. BMW claims this upgraded power unit is good for a 6.9-second run to 62 MPH on the way to a 99-mile-per-hour top speed. Despite this performance bump, it comes with the same 33-kWh battery pack found in the base i3.

Outside, the visual upgrades are subtle. A unique grille and accented fender arches are the only real cues identifying the sportier model. Those fender accents draw attention to upgraded, wider wheels that widen the car's track by 40 mm.

Under the metal, it gets a standard sport suspension. The ride height is also 10 mm lower than the base car's for a more hunkered-down look and feel.

We expect BMW to bring the updated i3 lineup to Los Angeles this fall, likely coinciding with its availability at BMW dealerships in the States.
