GMC previews next-generation Sierra

The all-new 2019 Sierra will make its debut online on March 1st.

GMC will introduce the all-new 2019 Sierra 1500 during an event taking place in Detroit on March 1st. A dark teaser image gives us our first look at the truck.

Published by website GM Authority, the image doesn't reveal a whole lot. We see a large grille with a correspondingly big GMC emblem and C-shaped daytime LEDs integrated into the headlights. We know what you're thinking: it will look a lot like the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado with different logos. Insiders suggest that, for once, it won't be the case.

Designers went to great lengths to differentiate the Sierra and the Silverado, according to Automotive News. The two models will be more different than ever before. Earlier spy shots suggest the Sierra will come with a bigger, bolder grille, GMC-specific lights on both ends, and a redesigned tailgate.

Expect to find similar changes inside as GMC moves to reinforce the Sierra's more upscale positioning. Automotive News reports the range-topping Sierra Denali will break cover at the same time as the standard model.

The Sierra and the Silverado will still be identical under the sheet metal. That means the truck will be bigger than the outgoing 2018 model yet it will be up to 450 pounds lighter depending on how it's configured. The engine line-up to include gasoline-burning V6 and V8 units and a straight-six turbodiesel.

GMC will publish additional details about the 2019 Sierra in the coming days. The standard Sierra and the up-market Sierra Denali will arrive in showrooms shortly after they break cover.
