The EPA range estimate is near the top of the pack, not far behind the Chevrolet Volt.

Honda has finally announced an EPA range estimate for the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid. With an estimated 47 miles of all-electric driving before the gasoline engine kicks in, the plug-in Clarity is claimed to lead the midsize class.

The car's 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine can be used to directly drive the vehicle or charge its 17-kWh battery pack. Both power sources provide a combined 181 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque.

"The Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid represents the dawn of a new era, setting the path to a new generation of Honda products that will bring electrified technology into the mainstream," says American Honda sales exec Ray Mikiciuk.

The Clarity may rule the midsize class, but its electric range falls short of the compact Chevrolet Volt (53 miles) and BMW i3 REX (97 miles).
