The Veloster could get the i30 N's 250-hp turbo four.Hyundai is serious about taking on the most respected names in the hot hatch segment. The company is putting the final touches on a GTI-fighting model named i30 N, and a recent report suggests it will deliver a one-two punch with a hotter version of the Veloster. The Veloster N will be based on the next generation of the company's funky, asymmetrical hatchback. Australian website Motoring has learned the model will share its engine with the aforementioned i30 N. That means power will be provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine tuned to pump out approximately 250 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive will come standard, and an eight-speed automatic might be offered at an extra cost.
As is often the case, the extra power will be complemented by a full body kit that will include a model-specific front bumper with bigger air dams, side skirts, and a new rear bumper with an air diffuser. Expect the N model to get new alloy wheels, and a sportier interior with sport seats up front.
The next-generation Veloster is tentatively scheduled to debut at a major auto show next year, but odds are the N model won't be available right at launch. We might have to wait until 2019 to see the first truly hot-rodded series-produced Veloster.
