Hyundai developing hologram tech for dashboards, cabin

\"While you are driving, a secretary or wife can be sitting next to you as a hologram,\" says Hyundai vice chairman Chung Eui-sun.

Hyundai is apparently developing hologram technology for next-generation vehicles.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Hyundai Motor Group vice chairman Chung Eui-sun outlined several interesting technologies that are currently under consideration. The Korean automaker is hoping to be "far ahead of everyone else" in hologram technology.

"We are working on holograms that can be displayed inside the car on dashboards and even in the passenger seats," the executive says. "While you are driving, a secretary or wife can be sitting next to you as a hologram."

The system is said to involve Hyundai's voice-control system. No technical details were mentioned during the interview.

The company is also collaborating with the Rhode Island School of Design to explore insects, taking inspiration from aerodynamics and body structures.

"Their skins, antennae and joints are subjects we study for mobility technology," Chung Eui-sun added. "For instance, spiders have eight eyes, while autonomous cars are equipped with more than 10 camera sensors such as LiDAR and radars."

The automaker has not pinned down a timeframe for introducing hologram systems or insect-inspired designs.
