2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a premium crossover designed to replace the LR2. Land Rover has made the Discovery Sport bigger than the LR2 in every direction in order to free up space for up to seven passengers. Recent changes The Discovery Sport gets new engine options for the latest model year. Overview The Sport’s front end falls in line with the Land Rover’s latest design language thanks to styling cues such as sharp, elongated headlights and a thin radiator grille, while available daytime running lights designed to look like a compass hint at the Sport's off-road capacity. Out back, the Discovery Sport features an upright hatch and tail lamps that are loosely inspired by the ones found on the smaller Evoque. Buyers can personalize the Sport by choosing from nine exterior colors and seven alloy wheel designs that can be ordered either in silver or in gloss black. A two-tone paint job is available at an extra cost. Life aboard The Discovery Sport offers seating for up to seven passengers in a 2+3+2 configuration, though the third row is designed primarily for small children. Both the third and the second row of seats can fold flat into the floor when extra trunk space is needed. Cargo capacity checks in at 32.7 cubic feet with five occupants on board and 66.9 cubic feet with just two occupants. The dashboard features a simple, functional design and the bulk of the switches are neatly arranged on the center console. The analog instrument cluster packs a five-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) screen that can be configured by the driver to provide a wide array of information about the vehicle and its surroundings. The Sport can be ordered with up to four 12-volt power outlets and six USB charging sockets to make sure that all occupants can stay connected on the go. An eight-inch color touch screen on the dashboard runs the next generation of Land Rover's infotainment system. Select Discovery Sport models come with Jaguar - Land Rover's InControl Apps technology, a smartphone integration software designed to work seamlessly with both Apple and Android devices. Passengers can access the bulk of their phone's features on the touch screen and use additional purpose-designed apps to book a hotel room, get parking information, check traffic and make conference calls. Under the hood Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It makes 237 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque in its most basic configuration, and it's bolted to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Buyers after a quicker Land Rover can order an evolution of the turbo four rated at 286 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. In this configuration, the Discovery Sport takes a brisk 6.2 seconds to reach 62 mph from a stop. The upgraded engine also brings styling enhancements. Fuel economy checks in at 21 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg in a combined cycle when buyers order the 237-horsepower engine. Selecting the more powerful unit lowers city mpg to 20. All-wheel drive comes standard. The Sport is fairly capable off-road thanks in part to 8.3 inches of ground clearance. The SUV boasts approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees, respectively, and the lower trim on the bumper can be removed to increase the approach angle if needed. The Sport is designed to tackle 45-degree gradients and drive through 23 inches of water. The latest generation of Land Rover's Terrain Response technology increases the Sport's off-road chops. Terrain Response has four modes: General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts and Sand. Terrain Response also includes a host of driving aids such as hill descent control, dynamic stability control, electronic traction control, roll stability control and gradient release control. Trim level breakdown The Discovery Sport is offered in three trim levels: SE, HSE and HSE Luxury. SE models come standard with heated power-adjustable door mirrors, automatic halogen headlights, rain-sensing wipers, partial leather upholstery daytime running lights, rear fog lights, body-colored door handles and mirror caps, a ten-speaker audio system, dual-zone A/C, Bluetooth connectivity, an eight-inch color touch screen integrated into the center console, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, an electronic parking brake and a push-button ignition. Stepping up to the HSE trim adds a memory function for the power mirrors, front fog lights, keyless entry, front parking sensors, a HomeLink transceiver, a power tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, grained leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable front seats with a memory function and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Finally, the range-topping HSE Luxury packs Atlas Silver trim, navigation, Windsor leather upholstery, an upgraded stereo, configurable interior mood lighting, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, illuminated aluminum tread plates and premium floor mats. Buyers can choose from a large number of option packages. The Vision Assist Package bundles a Blind Spot Monitoring with Closing Vehicle Sensing and Reverse Traffic Detection, xenon headlights, automatic high beams and a 360-degree camera. The Black Pack package adds gloss black trim on the radiator grille, the door mirror caps and the front fender vents as well as black emblems all around. Black Pack buyers can pick either 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels. The list of standalone options include the seven-seater configuration, advanced park assist and Land Rover’s InControl Apps technology. Occupant safety The Discovery Sport comes standard with driver and passenger front airbags, knee airbags, side curtain airbags and thorax airbags in addition to electronic traction control, stability control, trailer stability control and roll stability control. A number of electronic driving aids can be ordered at an extra cost including an Autonomous Emergency Braking system that helps avoid collisions or mitigate their impact at speeds of up to 50 mph. Key Competitors The Land Rover Discovery Sport is the only premium compact SUV that offers space for seven passengers. Buyers who don't need to carry seven people can look at a nearly endless list of competitors that includes the BMW X3, the Audi Q5, the Volvo XC60, the Acura RDX and the Lexus RX.
