The technology will combine acoustic, video, radar and lidar data to help navigate through extreme environments.

Jaguar Land Rover has shed more light on 'Cortex,' a development project that aims to adapt self-driving technology for off-road conditions.

"It's important that we develop our self-driving vehicles with the same capability and performance customers expect from all Jaguars and Land Rovers," says JLR autonomous vehicle research manager Chris Holmes.

Like autonomous systems under development for on-road driving, the Cortex technology will employ acoustic, video, radar and lidar data streams to help the vehicle maintain awareness of its environment.

Teams have been tasked with refining algorithms and optimizing sensors for off-road use. The company eventually hopes to achieve Level 5 fully autonomous operation in any terrain or weather conditions.
