A supplier production problem resulted in thin spots in the tank, requiring a complete tank replacement.

Volkswagen has already issued a recall for the new Atlas after a dealer spotted a problem caused gasoline to leak from the fuel tank.

The tank supplier had not noticed a material starvation issue during the tank manufacturing process, creating "thin spots" in some places on the tank wall.

The issue was fixed the same day it was detected, however several dozen tanks apparently left the factory without being caught by quality control.

Service technicians must replace the complete fuel-tank assembly to prevent fuel leaks and potential fires.
