Lotus confirms carbon-tub flagship, more 'civilized' than 3-11

Two new cars will be added to the lineup in 2020, while an SUV is slated for 2021 or 2022.

Lotus has confirmed several new models in the product pipeline, including a new flagship sports car to succeed the 3-11.

The limited-production car will be focused on the track, though it will be "much more civilized" than the 3-11, Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales told Car Magazine in a recent interview.

The company is working on a new carbon-fiber tub chassis for the new car, furthering the brand's obsession with weight reduction.

The current bonded aluminum tub architecture will carry forward for another new model, a mystery car that will serve as a more affordable replacement for an existing nameplate.

Both will be "absolutely stunning and gorgeous, in terms of design and aerodynamics," Gales says.

The new cars will arrive in showrooms in 2020, ahead of the brand's first SUV in 2021 or 2022.
