Maserati working on high-performance Levante GTS

Maserati is going after the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Maserati is reportedly developing a high-performance version of its Levante SUV to take on competitors like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GLE63.

Following the blueprint of its Quattroporte line, Maserati will use the GTS designation for its range-topping Levante model. And also like the Quattroporte, the Levante GTS will use a 3.8L turbocharged V8 developing 523 horsepower.

To go along with its more powerful engine, Autocar says the Levante GTS will also boast unique chassis settings, a sport-oriented air suspension and larger wheels. The Levante GTS will also sport visual changes from the standard SUV, like more aggressive bumpers.

Inside expect to see lots of carbon fiber trim and more standard features. The overall design of the Levante's cabin, however, isn't expected to change radically in GTS guise.

The GTS will slot above the S in the Levante range. Pricing has not been finalized, but you can expect the Levante GTS to carry a hefty premium over the S model. In the Quattroporte line, the GTS package adds nearly $43,000 to the base price of a Quattroporte S. The jump won't be that staggering for the Levante GTS, but buyers should be prepare for a $100,000 asking price.
