McLaren Speedtail to produce 'more than' 986 horsepower

The Speedtail will have a 'slightly different' hybrid application than the flagship P1.

McLaren has shed more light on the upcoming Speedtail hypercar, confirming more than 986 horsepower.

The three-seater will employ the company's trusty twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 and a hybrid system, following the same strategy established by the flagship P1.

"That architecture has gone from 426bhp in a GT4 to I-can't-tell-you-what-yet in a Speedtail," McLaren chief Mike Flewitt told TopGear at a recent event. "But it's more than 1,000PS [986 horsepower]."

With a slightly different hybrid application than the P1, the Speedtail promises to beat the iconic McLaren F1's 243-mph top speed. Flewitt says the company isn't interested in going up against Bugatti, Koenigsegg and Hennessey to make the fastest car in the world, however.

"We're not going for top speed for the sake of top speed," he said. "The car is more rounded than that, and there's more to it than just top speed."

The Speedtail will be fully revealed in October.
