The new battery pack, built in-house at a Daimler subsidiary, fits into a smaller footprint than the previous lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo) module despite bringing a 50-percent increase in energy storage.
The company expects the S560e to reach 25 miles on battery power alone, double the S550e's 12-mile all-electric EPA range estimate.
The 9G-Tronic hybrid transmission benefits from improved electronics, allowing a higher output of 121 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque from the electric motor alone. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 provides another 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, though it is unclear if the system is programmed to simultaneously apply full torque from both the internal combustion engine and electric motor.
Drivers seeking the optimum balance between performance and efficiency can pay attention to the haptic accelerator pedal. A double pulse in the pedal warns drivers when they are approaching the point where the internal combustion engine kicks in.
