Spied: Mercedes' next-generation C-Class sedan breaks cover

by Drew Johnson

Expect the next C-Class to debut in either 2019 or 2020.

Even though SUVs seem to be taking over the world, Mercedes-Benz isn't giving up on its passenger car lineup. Next up for the German automaker will be a totally revamped version of the C-Class sedan, which was spied while undergoing testing earlier today.

The next-generation C-Class, internally known as the W206, will make the move to Mercedes' MRA2 rear-wheel drive architecture. Compared to the current C-Class platform, the new chassis is lighter, and it even shares some components with Mercedes' Electric Vehicle Architecture.

The new C-Class, which is likely a couple of years away from production, will retain the same basic size and styling of the current model. Naturally the next C-Class will have all-new body work, but don't expect a radical deviation as far as design is concerned.

Inside, however, the W206 C-Class should make bigger waves. It'll use a new infotainment system that will use a touchscreen in place of today's joystick. The next C-Class will also adopt the autonomous driving aids currently found in the flagship S-Class sedan.

The new C-Class will be powered by a four-cylinder engine in its base form, and a six-cylinder engine in its upper trims. A mild hybrid is also expected to join the line and could boost power to 400 horsepower. A hot rod AMG version of the new C-Class is almost a certainty.
