2018 Mercedes-Maybach S650

The Mercedes-Maybach S650 is a high-end version of the already luxurious S-Class sedan that is designed to fill the void left by members of the defunct Maybach brand. Overview Largely based on the S-Class, the Maybach-branded model boasts several unique features intended to elevate the sedan's status. Most notable is a wheelbase that has been stretched by over eight inches in order to provide more legroom for the passengers wealthy enough to ride in the back. The S650's dome-shaped roof has also been modified, providing an additional 0.5 inches of rear-seat headroom. Although it's longer than the regular S650, the Maybach's rear doors have actually been shortened by 2.6 inches and the triangular windows were moved to the body of the car. Mercedes explains this was done to give an added feeling of privacy to rear-seat passengers. Other exterior modifications include a redesigned radiator grille, a restyled lower bumper, chrome trim around the windows, model-specific exhaust outlets and 20-inch light-alloy wheels exclusive to the Maybach model. Maybach emblems on the c pillars and on the decklid wrap up the visual upgrades. Life aboard Fitting of the Maybach name, the S650's interior gains hand-stitched Nappa leather on the door panels, the seats and the headliner. Real wood trim, numerous chrome accents and an analog clock with an IWC design integrated into the dashboard all help create a luxurious ambiance inside. However, the Maybach 650 was openly designed around the rear occupants. It comes with power-adjustable "executive" rear seats that feature a hot-stone massage function and that can recline up to 43.5 degrees, allowing the rear passengers to comfortably sleep on long drives. A standard Chauffeur Package makes it possible to move the front passenger's seat all the way forward, while headrests with extra cushions add a finishing touch to the lounge-like passenger compartment. The rear passengers enjoy their own automatic dual-zone A/C, and Mercedes engineers have gone to great lengths to make the Maybach the world's quietest regular-production sedan. Under the hood Power for the Maybach comes from a S650-sourced twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine that makes 621 horsepower between 4,800 and 5,400 rpm and a massive 738 lb-ft. of torque from 2,300 to 4,300 rpm. Linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission, the twelve-cylinder sends the 214-inch long behemoth from zero to 60 mph in an impressive five seconds and on to a top speed that is electronically limited to 155 mph. Rear-wheel drive is the only configuration offered on the S650. Standard and optional equipment The long list of standard features includes Mercedes’ comfort-enhancing Magic Body Control suspension, a panoramic sliding sunroof, power-operated sun blinds, a heated windshield, a heads-up display, a LED Intelligent Lighting System, a Burmester High-End 3D Surround Sound System, the aforementioned Executive Rear Seat Package and a rear-seat entertainment system. The S600 also comes standard with, believe it or not, a pair of silver-plated champagne flutes, though a bottle of Dom Perignon is not included. One of the highlights from the list of options is a rear center console with cup holders that are both heated and cooled as well as two airliner-inspired foldaway tables that can be configured to virtually any position. Buyers can further spruce up the S600 by selecting from a plethora of exterior colors and interior features including piano lacquer trim and a Magic Sky Control function that essentially tints the panoramic sunroof at the push of a button. Occupant safety The Maybach S650 comes standard with front, side, curtain and thorax airbags, seat cushion airbags for the rear passengers and seat belt airbags (called beltbags in Mercedes-speak). Additionally, it benefits from numerous electronic driving aids including Pre-Safe Brake with Pedestrian Recognition, Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, BAS Plus with CrossTraffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. Key competitors The Mercedes-Maybach S650 squares off against super-luxurious sedans like the Bentley Flying Spur and the stylish Aston Martin Rapide S. Buyers with extra cash in their pocket can also look at the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II.
