Mercedes-Benz upgrades GLE headlights for Top Safety Pick Plusby Justin King

Mercedes-Benz has upgraded the GLE-Class headlights once again, elevating the SUV to achieve Top Safety Pick Plus status.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently completed a driver-side small overlap test, verifying that structural reinforcements have been implemented symmetrically to protect both the driver and front passenger in collisions on either side of the front end.
"The structure of the GLE-Class held up reasonably well in the passenger-side test," the IIHS says. "The passenger dummy's movement was well-controlled by the safety belt and airbags, and measurements taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of injuries in a crash of this severity."
Beginning in models built after March, the optional LED headlights now provide 'good' performance. Previously, the top trim levels only achieved an 'acceptable.' The halogen projectors on the base models still earn a 'poor' mark due to inadequate visibility.
Other TSP+ winners in the midsize luxury SUV category include the BMW X3 and Mercedes' GLC-Class.
