New BMW 3 Series wagon appears in patent drawingsby Justin King
The wagon variant is not expected to be officially unveiled until 2019.
BMW's next-generation 3 Series Sports Wagon has apparently surfaced ahead of its official unveiling.
Monochrome renderings submitted to Brazil's National Institute of Industrial Property and spotted by Quatro Rodas show the redesigned 3 Series in wagon form.
The company developed the sedan and wagon concurrently, but the wagon is not expected to be revealed until next year.
Like the outgoing sedan and wagon, the patent drawings suggest both body styles will feature a nearly identical exterior aside from the rear shape. The wagon will presumably carry over the sedan's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, offering a few more ponies and significantly more twist than the current mill.
The seventh-generation 3 Series is longer and wider than its predecessor, yet its weight and aerodynamic drag have been reduced to improve fuel efficiency.
The sedan is scheduled to arrive in showrooms by March.
