Nissan to make Safety Shield 360 standard equipment

The features will become standard equipment on all of Nissan's "top-selling models" by 2021.

Nissan has announced plans to make its new Safety Shield 360 technology suite standard equipment on its most popular models.

The suite includes six elements including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, high-beam assist, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking.

The company promises to make Safety Shield 360 standard equipment on all of its "top-selling models" by 2021, representing more than a million vehicles annually.

"Our philosophy is to bring Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies to market in our most popular and affordable vehicles," says Nissan North America chairman Denis Le Vot.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says cross-traffic alert reduces crashes by 22 percent; the combination of rearview cameras and sensors reduces crashes by 42 percent; and rear emergency braking reduces backing crashes by 78 percent.

The 2019 Altima and 2019 Rogue will be the first vehicles with Safety Shield 360. Both go on sale this fall.
