Nissan to seek more independence following Ghosn arrest?

Nissan has reportedly expanded its Ghosn wrongdoing investigation to include the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

The arrest of Carlos Ghosn and his ouster from Nissan has stirred talk of deeper troubles in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

Ghosn has been accused of underreporting his income from Nissan and collaborating with another executive, Greg Kelly, to misuse company resources. The scandal has not yet extended to the alliance, which is still officially led by Ghosn.

A Reuters report suggests Nissan has informed Renault that evidence has emerged of potential wrongdoing at Renault-Nissan BV, the jointly-owned Dutch entity that is controlled by Renault and manages the alliance.

Ghosn is considered the mastermind if the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi consortium. Some reports suggest the relationship between the companies has become strained, however. A breakup is not viewed as likely, but Ghosn's presumed ouster from the alliance could spark a leadership struggle.

In his announcement of the Ghosn fiasco, Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa hinted that the Japanese automaker will push for leadership changes in the wake of the "negative outcome of the long regime of Mr. Ghosn."
